Rotating black holes may be able to create entangled states within single photons.
I am sitting here, on the bench, with a coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other, contemplating the black and starry sky. I’m dragging smoke from the cigarette and drink some coffee!
I’m thinking of the light that crosses the Universe all the way from the farthest stars and a strange idea does not give me peace. It’s like a mosquito that irritates me with its perpetual buzz. Does the light that comes to us from far away, contains quantum information like the one I produce in the laboratory with the help of mirrors, beam splitters and prisms?
We use to encode quantum information in photons by manipulating the polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM) of photons. It’s a tedious work, but in the end, twisting the polarization and creating OAM, using beam splitters and prisms, a quantum message is stored in a tiny single photon.

Surprisingly, dead stars can provide a plausible answer to the question. Remarkably, our laborious work in the lab is easily done by gravity around rotating black holes. Black holes are changing the “face” of the surrounding spacetime, it curves it and it twists it. While traveling through this distorted spacetime, the photons twist the polarization and create OAM. Finally, when leaving the gravity of the black hole, photons have a quantum message stored.
Unbelievable, a quantum computer already exists in nature!
I’m dragging another smoke from the cigarette! And still, what an irony!, I think, the gravity is creating the “spooky action at a distance”. I wonder what Einstein would have said about this? , as I finish my last drop of coffee.
I finish the cigarette and it’s time to put on paper all these thoughts that you can find in my newly published research in New Astronomy journal (Creation of single-photon entangled states around rotating black holes – https://doi.org/10.1016/j.newast.2017.09.001).
It just remains to decipher the quantum message that the black holes send us. This requires another coffee and another cigarette!
My article have just been released. In brief, warped spacetime near spinning black holes may create entangled states of photons; exactly in the manner a quantum computer processes the quantum information. A surprising marriage of general relativity and quantum information theory!
My idea of searching the extraterrestrial qubits starts to gain traction!
Humanity is facing now the dawn of a new technological era involving quantum mechanics in almost all aspects of social life, from computation to communication. It might be natural to ask if we shouldn’t consider search for quantum messages from extraterrestrial intelligence.
China has launched the first quantum communication satellite last year bringing the humanity on the verge of a huge jump in communication technology. Considering light as the carrier of the quantum information, the Chinese satellite is primarily designed to test the robustness of quantum entanglement, a bizarre property of quantum systems responsible for quantum computation and quantum communication. Furthermore, this first quantum satellite will probe not only high security data encryption but also a new way of data transfer as quantum information encoded in properties of the light particles, photons.
The quantum communication revolution may prove importance in transferring data at far distances and so, in communicating with…
